This prize was born in
Munich by the Adalbert Stifter Association and was awarded for the
first time in 1994. In 1995-1998 it was awarded together with the
Bernard-Bolzano-Foundation in Prague . Since 2000, it is granted
together with Prague ’s Union for Good Neighbourly Relations (Unie
pro dobrě sousedství česky a německy hovořicích zemí, Praha)
The prize is given to
both a Czech and a German personality, who are engaged in breaking
down prejudices, promoting Czech-German reconciliation and improving
co-operation.
The Art Prize itself comprises
of Works of Art made by German and Czech artists.
The winners are selected
by two juries, which each have three to four members. The German
jury elects the Czech winner; the Czech jury elects the German winner.
The members of the German jury are elected by the Adalbert Stifter
Association and accordingly the members of the Czech jury are elected
by the Union für gute Nachbarschaft (Union for Good Neighbourly
Relations) in Prague . Each jury works independently and their decisions
are binding.
The prize is awarded every
year in the autumn, with the venues alternating between Germany
and the Czech Republic and in co-operation with the respective cities
and regions.
