Die Bibliothek des ADALBERT STIFTER VEREINs

The library of the Adalbert Stifter Association boasts some 10,000 volumes: fiction and poetry of Czech and German-Bohemian authors, secondary literature on literary studies, exhibition catalogues and art volumes as well as literature on the Arts and History of the Arts in the Bohemian Regions. These are integrated into the Scientific Library of the Sudetendeutsche Haus (Sudeten German House) that is administered by the Collegium Carolinum, the research centre for the Bohemian Regions, and is located in the basement of the Sudetendeutsche Haus.

A small number of them, however, are located in the reference library of the Adalbert Stifter Associations on the third floor of the Sudetendeutsche Haus and where access is available on request.

The volumes reflect the unique purchasing and collecting activity of the 1950s. Thus, we find large collections that came into being at the end of the 19 th century: scientific explanations of art and cultural monuments, arranged by political districts (each in Czech or German), which at the same time complement the volumes „Die Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild” (the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Picture).

Moreover there are equally complex arrangements of the volumes „Czechs“, containing illustrations of Karel Liebscher (arranged by the old-circle method), the early topographic works of Jaroslav Schaller (Bohemia) and Gregor Wolny (Moravia), early descriptions of Prague etc. Finally, in the reference library we also find the 1896 work of Czech lexicography „Ottův slovník naučný“ (Otto’s encyclopaedia) with its supplementary volumes from 1930, the German edition of the „History of Bohemia“ by Franz (František) Palacký, the Prague Stifter-edition in reproduction, dictionaries and numerous own publications: Annuals, catalogues, the Prestel series of art books etc.
